Posted by Mikers On April - 30 - 2011 1 COMMENT

Like many, I stopped getting excited about a new drum apps, oooww after the 100th one arrived in the App Store. I mean, how many do we really need people? Honestly?  The arrival of Ratatap Drums caught my eye (and ears) for one simple feature that I think has been missing on a drum app, since iGOG (oh, and please release a new version if you’re listening WaveMachine Labs!). The feature is velocity sensitive drums. Pretty basic requirement if you ask me, yet next to no drum apps have bothered offering it. Well, Ratatap drums DOES, and it also happens to offer a few other useful features, and at a reasonable price too, plus there’s a FREE version to test drive…. Read on -

MicW release i436

Posted by Mikers On April - 30 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

I only just came across this news via Sound on Sound’s website, but this was announced at Musikmesse in April. MicW has been in the measurement microphone business for over a decade, so they know a thing or two about audio reference gear. This is their first product aimed at the iOS market, and since there are no shortage of apps to use it with, including the great bundle in AudioKit (see ad on the right side of this page), it should do well…When I can find somewhere that is actually selling it! Here’s the official guff -

Frankfurt, April 12, 2011: MicW, the Beijing-based manufacturer of quality recording, live and measurement microphones, launched i436 measurement microphone for iPhone, iPad and iTouch at this year’s Pro Light & Sound/Musikmesse exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany.  The i436 is designed and manufactured according to IEC 61672 and ANSI S1.4 measurement microphone standards. It has very flat frequency response and omni-directional pattern. It was tested for long term stability against high humidity and temperature. It is solidly designed using stainless steel housing and it weighs only 6 grams.

For sound engineers, they will find the i436 to be convenient tool for sound level analysis and field measurements with their mobile device. The i436 is a standard 1/4” measurement microphone. The accuracy of the measurement can be ensured by using a sound level calibrator. The engineers can use their iPhone or iPad to check the installations and trouble shootings for live, broadcasting and home system. With i436, your iPhone or iPad can become a sound level meter. It is easy to measure the sound level when you needed.

For singers and vocalists, they will find the i436 to be their indispensable tool for capturing their voice for real time during live performances or recording sessions.

For Musicians, they will love the versatility of i436 for recording and accurately reproducing their musical instruments and their band performances and concerts.

For non-musicians, they will find the i436 to be their ideal companion for recording high quality podcasts, speeches, lessons, interviews, video soundtracks or any other source that can be recorded on the go with their mobile device”

At Frankfurt, the responses to the i436 are overwhelming. It is definitely the right product for iOS device users.” comments MicW’s CEO Dr. Qunli Wu. “Our aim is to extend our 12 years experiences in manufacturing measurement microphones to i-series for iOS users.”

More information about the new products is available on MicW’s website: www.mic-w.com

Yamaha’s MIDI solution for iOS

Posted by Mikers On April - 26 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Unveiled at Musikmesse 2011, Yamaha was showing off a new portable MIDI interface designed for iOS devices called the i-MX1. – a new MIDI interface for the iPad.

Not unlike the existing product from Line 6, this plugs directly into your device of choice and offers native CORE support for MIDI in and out with music apps that offer this.

There is no word on pricing or a launch date yet.

Here’s the official word from Yamaha -

Yamaha introduces the i-MX1 on the Frankfurter Music fair – a MIDI interface that‘s connected to the Apple iPad and thus offering vast possibilities to control MIDI equipment.

The Apple iPad has proven itself as a very handy tool, combining  a very nice touch panel with a reasonable size. It has sold in large quantities. On Winter NAMM 2011 Yamaha introduced a series of Apps that will allow a wireless controlling of the MOTIF XF Music Production Synthesizer.

To be able to control synthesizers that won‘t allow a wireless connection to the iPad, Yamaha now presents a MIDI interface that‘s connected to the iPad.

In a small, black device the i-MX1 carries the needed electronics and two connectors for the included adapter cables which represent the MIDI input and output (with the well known 16 MIDI channels each).

It does not just connect to the iPad, but to the iPhone and the iPod Touch, too. Since these devices are much smaller, they are even more handy controllers.

The i-MX1 is compatible to the drivers provided by the iPad-OS (iOS, Core MIDI), there‘s no need for special drivers. So even thirdparty applications that are using the iOS drivers can use the i-MX1 as MIDI-Interface.

The i-MX1 will help the iPad to continue its triumphal procession to the shores of ‘old school’ MIDI.

LS9 StageMix

Posted by Mikers On April - 18 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

StageMix is an application for the Apple iPad that provides remote
control of Yamaha LS9 digital mixing console functions via a simple, intuitive graphical interface from anywhere within wireless range. The software has been specifically designed to allow engineers to adjust monitor mixes from the performers’ positions on stage, directly controlling mix parameters via the iPad rather than having to rely on verbal directions to a second engineer. The result is better mixes in less time: a huge advantage during high-pressure pre-show setup. StageMix does not provide remote control of all LS9 parameters, but is focused on the requirements for adjusting monitor mixes on stage.
