The Australian developer, One Red Dog, and creator of the Molten drum machine, is throwing the last few licks of paint on their latest musical app, Arctic Keys. As the picture (right) suggests, this is a virtual analog synth built for iPad, so expect plenty of tweaking of oscillators, filters, and effects, plus a sequencer to crank out tunes.
One of the first key differences between Arctic Keys and some virtual synth apps, is the use of alias free oscillators with analog modelling DSP. This means no samples are used, so no digital artefacts are present when you start playing at extreme ends of the pitch spectrum.
Another neat feature is the gated step sequencer that can modulate many of the parameters on the synth. You can set filter modulations, then either trigger a note pattern like an arpeggiator, or have it modulate as you play. Nice!
Arctic Keys will also have full CoreMIDI support including virtual ports, MIDI Learn, phrase recording with Sonoma AudioCopy export, wav export, MIDI file export, sharing via e-mail and Wi-Fi as well as iTunes, different keyboard sizes and 3 keyboard modes including multi-touch pitch bend and aftertouch.
About the only thing left to know, is how it actually sounds. For that, head over to SoundCloud to hear some demos - http://soundcloud.com/one-red-dog-media
I’ll let you know the minute it launches anyway, or keep an eye on the developer’s site - http://www.onereddog.com.au/

MAKES LEARNING GUITAR FUN
This app may not be everyone’s cup of tea here, given that 99% of the apps covered here are aimed at creating, mixing, and generally mincing on about electronic music, however one clever feature about this app struck me as something that could be very useful if integrated across all genres of music. The Classical Melody Book – Sheet Music Library app offers classical musicians access to hundreds of downloadable sheet music of popular, dare I say, ‘classic’ works from centuries ago. These are conveniently stored as PDFs, and you can also print out and share documents with others.
MidiBridge is a utility that interconnects all MIDI interfaces (external and network) on an iOS device.
The PiQ musical instrument offers an entirely new and fascinating musical experience. This is a different instrument and different playing experience from any you already know. You start playing music in the simplest possible way, and then can move into playing and recording sophisticated, even radical, music. PiQ offers a range of intriguing finger gestures that can keep you immersed for hours just fiddling and tweaking and jamming. You can record your music, along with your voice (and your friends’ voices), and play back the music you’ve created. In the paid version, you can immediately share your recordings to your Facebook wall, or by SMS (text message) or email. In fact, sharing a voice recording by SMS is a voice SMS system in its own right – record your singing or simply a voice message, with or without notes, and send it instantly embedded in a text message, and whoever you are sending it to can listen to your recording instantly. And, you can make the PiQ musical instrument unique to yourself by overlaying it with your own photos.
