Arctic Keys is looking cool

Posted by Mikers On August - 30 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

The Australian developer, One Red Dog, and creator of the Molten drum machine, is throwing the last few licks of paint on their latest musical app, Arctic Keys. As the picture (right) suggests, this is a virtual analog synth built for iPad, so expect  plenty of tweaking of oscillators, filters, and effects, plus a sequencer to crank out tunes.

One of the first key differences between Arctic Keys and some virtual synth apps, is the use of alias free oscillators with analog modelling DSP. This means no samples are used, so no digital artefacts are present when you start playing at extreme ends of the pitch spectrum.

Another neat feature is the gated step sequencer that can modulate many of the parameters on the synth. You can set filter modulations, then either trigger a note pattern like an arpeggiator, or have it modulate as you play. Nice!

Arctic Keys will also have  full CoreMIDI support including virtual ports, MIDI Learn, phrase recording with Sonoma AudioCopy export, wav export, MIDI file export, sharing via e-mail and Wi-Fi as well as iTunes, different keyboard sizes and 3 keyboard modes including multi-touch pitch bend and aftertouch.

About the only thing left to know, is how it actually sounds. For that, head over to SoundCloud to hear some demos - http://soundcloud.com/one-red-dog-media

I’ll let you know the minute it launches anyway, or keep an eye on the developer’s site - http://www.onereddog.com.au/

Classical Sheet Music for the 21st century

Posted by Mikers On August - 26 - 2011 1 COMMENT

This app may not be everyone’s cup of tea here, given that 99% of the apps covered here are aimed at creating, mixing, and generally mincing on about electronic music, however one clever feature about this app struck me as something that could be very useful if integrated across all genres of music. The Classical Melody Book – Sheet Music Library app offers classical musicians access to hundreds of downloadable sheet music of popular, dare I say, ‘classic’ works from centuries ago. These are conveniently stored as PDFs, and you can also print out and share documents with others.

But the app feature that caught my attention is the unique Melody Search option that brings up a piano keyboard where you can play in a few notes of the melody for a piece of music you can’t remember the name of (shame on you, you musical virtuoso!), and if the piece of music is in your sheet music library, it will turn up a result. Now, that’s pretty damn smart.

An update arrived just a few days ago with the following new features -

1. Improved melody search – we are very excited about the new melody search! Now, you can use the keyboard to play the first 6 notes of the melody. Quick and fun way to find music!
2. Email and print for all sheet music – Download, Print and Share by email as much as you like.
2. Download sheet music in classical collection – One time download to view the sheet music. Quick way to get music on the go. Once the sheet music is downloaded there is no need for internet connection to view it.

Coming Soon in next version 1.2 with no extra charge:

* More free music pieces
* Even better melody search…stay tuned!
* Ability to create Set Lists

The native max app volume from the internal speakers on iPhones and iPads has constraints.  We have worked hard to provide volume and volume controls that optimize your experience within those constraints.  However, in many environments with external ambient noise levels, you may want to use high quality headphones or earbuds or external speakers for most effective volume when using the PiQ music app, especially when playing lower notes.

Drum Tab

Posted by Mikers On August - 23 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

At last a drum app, offering something more than just virtual pads to tap on, although you can still do that with this app. The main difference here is the appearance of a drum tab editor, which is something I’ve been waiting to see in the App Store for a while now. It doesn’t support tab import, MIDI export, or Core MIDI, but these features are apparently expected in future updates. Here’s the official guff -

Record, Edit, Playback and Export drums just the way you like it:- in tab format.

- Drum Tab lets you record and play drums by touching the animated drum kit on screen, or by plugging in a V-Drums or General Midi drum kit into Midi Mobilizer.

- Edit your drum parts using the simple tab editor and playback the recorded drums at any tempo.

- Share your master piece by emailing your song in well formatted drum tab notation ready to post to any drum tab website.

- Supports 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 7/4 and 9/4 time signatures.

- Quantize to 16, 12 (triplet), 8, or 4 grid sizing.

- Different play speeds to help learn complex beats.
