It’s been a busy year already for Wooji Juice, with two big updates for their sweet sounding synth, Grain Science. Below are the new additions just added in V1.2

Grain Science is a beautiful synthesiser for iPad. Designed for musicians, soundscape artists and SFX engineers who want to go beyond our Sylo Synthesiser, Grain Science is built on similar principles of granular synthesis, but is vastly more powerful. Unlike many “experimental” granular apps, Grain Science mixes it up with traditional synthesis techniques to make an exciting new hybrid synthesiser.

What’s new in 2.0

Fingerlab is very happy to announce its biggest update for DM1 with version 2.0. DM1 now comes with 2 new super cool tools “The Randomizer” and “The Automation” for instant and fun beat making. Patterns are now also expandable to 32 Steps for extra creativity. We have added 24 new drum kits. As well as AudioCopy, WIST synchronisation between two iPads, MIDI In and more cool features. Yes, it is a big update!

Grab DM1 – The Drum Machine now –

I realise we focus mostly on the serious music making apps out there, but this one is just too cute not to mention. It’s basic concept is a dual synth that you can play around with by sliding your fingers around the screen. It’s free, and there are in-app purchases for addition ‘sounds’, but don’t expect to get your hands dirty in freaky filter land, it’s just not that sort of app. Oh they’ve thrown in a few drum loops too, or you can play your own tunes, just to give you some backing to ‘noodle’ along with. Catalogue this one under ‘ light hearted fun’!

Everybody’s favorite musical pugs are back – this time for FREE!
Definitely the puggiest two voice synthesizer on the app store. Dress your pugs up in costumes for different voices – everything from a snowy wonderful bleepy voice to a swampy Pugstep rumble. Give them hats for beats – mix and match for thousands of variations!

There is obviously no shortage of notepad style apps available for jotting down lyrical ideas, I mean hell, you could even use a pen and napkin if you want to do it old school. A couple of dedicated apps have just launched, however, that include some handy features for those who find themselves writing lyrics on a regular basis.

Tom says he came up with the idea for Lyric Master 4000 whilst working on an album this year, and since he has got so much out of the freely available VST plug-ins he’s used with Cubase, he wanted to give something back, by offering this app for free too. Nice one Tom, allow me to thank you on behalf of everyone else!

The Lyric Master 4000 is a songwriter’s notepad. I made it as I always found myself sat in front of the computer, looping a section of some new song, trying to figure out some lyrics. With it, you can now do this from the comfort of a tube train, or whilst sat under a tree in some pleasant green area. The possible locations are endless!

Features:

- Anchor sections to parts of your track and quickly loop or play them.
- Create multple versions of each section and swipe with your finger to switch between them.
- Record a backing track using the built-in recorder.
- Add mixes from your DAW using iTunes file transfer.
- Click-and-hold on mp3/aac/m4a/wav files in other apps (such as in your inbox) and choose ‘Open With Lyric Master 4k’ to import your tracks.
- Times are stored in bars, so that if you change tempo with a new version of your backing, they will stay in place.
- Cheat Sheat display gives you a large font display of the current version of your lyrics and turns off screen-lock – perfect for recording.
- Email yourself completed songs, with or without alternate versions.
- Works in the iPhone too! Though it is a little more fiddly due to the small screen.

Please note, in order to avoid dissapointment, this app does not do any of the following things:

- Allow you to record on top of your backing track.
- Include a dictionary/theasaurus/rhyme generator.
- Support tracks in the music library on your iPad/iPhone

If you are someone who writes words first, then the music comes later, this may not be the app for you!

MoDrum was my fav retro sounding drum machine when it launched in late 2010. FunkBox and DM1 have enjoyed all the attention more recently, though the new update for MoDrum has some exciting new features that could put it back in the limelight here at Promusicapps HQ. The things that have me most excited are the new Audio Looper and file import with auto temop syncing. Nice on Fingers Pro!
