Crank up the Distort+Delay

Posted by Mikers On June - 26 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Distort+Delay is a real-time audio processing application that adds high-quality distortion and delay effects to any incoming audio signal. Both acoustic and electric instruments produce excellent results. Performances can be recorded for later playback or sharing with friends.

Audio samples are available at: http://distortdelay.signalsandstuff.com/

Effect descriptions:

This app produces a wide range of effects, ranging from minor enhancement to wild modulations. The tube-style distortion effect allows for a variety of tones, from subtle warmth to heavy crunch.

An “8-bit” lo-fi crusher is also included. When active, the 8-bit lo-fi replaces the tube distortion and allows the control of both gain and phase. The result of this bit-crushing is similar to everyone’s favorite 80s-style video game console.

The delay effect works much the same as any guitar pedal: short delay-time produces a reverb-like sound; medium settings produce a slap-back echo; and larger delays create “spacey” sound textures. The included “hold” button allows for creative audio experimentation. Delay adjustments are smooth and can be heard as the familiar pitching effect usually associated with analog tape echoes.

Compression is included to help normalize microphone input. It can be toggled off for direct-input cable connections.

This application supports iPhone microphones, Apple-headphones microphones, dock-connector microphones, or guitar-to-iPhone cables.

Effects details:
- Distortion effects: classic tube and 8-bit lo-fi with tone and gain controls.
- Delay effects: 743ms maximum delay with variable feedback, and hold effect.
- Compressor: automatically normalizes microphone volumes.

Additional features:
- Capture your performances for future listening.
- E-mail your creations to your friends.
- Lossless AAC encoding is supported on iPhone 3GS+, iPod Touch 3rd Gen+, and iPad devices. Older devices will send WAV files.

ProRemote offers high-priced DAW control

Posted by Mikers On June - 26 - 2010 1 COMMENT

Ok, so this app has been around for quite a while, but it hasn’t appeared here before, so we thought we’d at least make mention of it for those that feel the need to spend this much on a DAW control app, even though there are plenty of cheaper alternatives available these days. There is an LE version that’s worth considering if you don’t need all the ‘pro’ features.

ProRemote is the World’s first 32 channel touch sensitive control surface that fits in the palm of your hand.

ProRemote allows you to control your Audio applications wirelessly using your existing Wifi network. Get realtime meter data and control your rig from across the room with flying faders or across the planet!

One binary runs on your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

- Are you behind the drums and need to check your levels and press record?

- Do you frequently need to be in two places at the same time?

- Do you like sitting on the couch and playing guitar instead of being glued to the computer?

ProRemote is your solution. If you only need basic remote control of ProTools, Ableton Live, Apple Logic or Soundtrack Pro, see our other less expensive product ProRemote Light Edition (ProRmt LE) and ProTransport.

ProRemote on an iPad is like having four Mackie Control Universal Pro’s but better because it is wireless and much less expensive. You get almost $5000 of hardware for the price of ProRemote. And ProRemote also works on your iPhone and iPod touch.

Need an XY controller? Check out Pro XY. Use gravity to turn your knobs! Pro XY is included free in ProRemote.

Need professional MIDI pads for drum programming or other tasks? ProPads is your solution and is also included free with ProRemote.

All updates to ProRemote will be free.

This version “officially” supports:
- ProTools including a new skin for ProTools version 8
- Apple Logic
- Ableton Live 7
- Soundtrack Pro

Unofficially we support (no skin or custom fader tapers yet):
- Digital Performer
- MIO Console
- Cubase

** You must download ProRemoteServer in order to use ProRemote. **

Please visit www.folabs.com/download.html to download the server.

The price of the remote includes unlimited free updates as well as free online support. Connect with us on Twitter: @proremote

ProRemote is Mac only- we are working on Windows support. A public beta for Windows XP is available for download.

Sweet suite of audio tools

Posted by Mikers On June - 26 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Audio Kit is a collection of four applications which are essential for those working in audio and sound. A real time Spectrum Analyser, a Scope to display waveforms, an SPL (sound pressure level) Meter, and a sine wave Signal Generator.

-View a real time spectrum of audio with the Spectrum Analyser
-View the actual waveform of the audio signal with the Scope
-An SPL Meter provides measurement of sound levels using an A-weighting
-The Signal Generator provides a sine wave output up to 20,000Hz in 1 Hz steps.

FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) is used to calculate the frequencies in the Spectrum Analyser and these are displayed in real time. The frequency is displayed in either logarithmic or linear scale.

The display of the Scope can be adjusted easily using pinch gestures in both horizontal and vertical directions. Zero crossing detection of the waveform provides a smooth display and can be set to either positive or negative direction zero crossing.

There is a screen capture facility in both the Spectrum Analyser and the Scope allowing you to save the spectra and waveforms for future reference.

SPL Meter continuously displays the sound pressure level, and has minimum and maximum displays also.

The output of the Signal Generator can be viewed on the other parts of the App.
Frequency is selected using picker wheels and allows for accurate control of frequency to within 1Hz. Volume is continuously adjustable, and there is a switch to quickly turn off volume and quickly reset it to the previously set volume.

All parts of the App have direct access to a help document.

Samplecraze Compression Tutorials

Posted by Mikers On June - 10 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Eventually, someone had to come up with this idea. These two apps are essentially ‘How-To’ guides on how to use compression. It’s probably nothing you can’t find out for free online already, however you do get some audio samples to hear some examples of compression being used.

There are few subjects more confusing than compression. It’s one thing understanding what the various controls do in theory, but quite another to know which ones to tweak to give your sounds more body, even out their dynamics, and bring forth all their detail from the depths of your mixes.

From beginner to advanced these iPhone Apps are better than reading any book, the Samplecraze Compression iPhone Apps train your ears to hear how the sound changes with different compressor settings and types, so you learn how to extract the best results from your own tracks.

Tutorials included in this app.

- Compression Primer: A detailed explanation of all the features of a compressor and how to use them.

- Compressing drum loops: Advanced techniques used in dynamically reshaping drum loops.

- Compressing drum hits: Using compressor features and techniques in creating new textures from kicks, snares and claps.

- Compressing a plucked instrument: Understanding the techniques and processes used in compressing the most complex of all instruments.

AC-7 Pro coming for iPad

Posted by Mikers On March - 28 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Saitara Software has just released an update for it DAW wireless control software with, AC-7 DAW CONTROLLER V2.0.

However, we’re even more excited to see the developer is working on a ‘Pro’ version specially for the iPad. Aside from the obvious benefits of the larger display offering more room for additional controls, we’re not sure at this stage what other features this new Pro version of the app will include.  If the look of the user interface is anything to go by, its shaping up very nicely indeed.

SPL Graph

Posted by Mikers On March - 22 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

SPL Graph is an audio level chart recorder for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It works by averaging the SPL for one second, applying an optional weighting filter, and plotting the sound level.

** Important **

This app is also available as a module within AudioTools, at a lower price. If you are planning to buy iAudioInterface or iProMic, or if you want one bundled audio app. you should download AudioTools and buy this app from within AudioTools rather than buying it here, since there is no way to transfer purchased apps.

SPL Graph can record up to 24 hours of sound level data, with single second resolution. The graph starts with a one-minute window, and as a minute is recorded, the graph re-scales automatically and adds another minute to show the data collected so far.

Tap the green play button to play back the recorded audio, and use the cursor to scrub the audio location on the graph. Use this feature to listen to events that you can see on the graph.

You can scroll and scale the graph vertically, in dB, by using standard swipe and pinch gestures. You can also scroll and expand and contract the time axis using gestures. Zoom out to a full 24 hours, or zoom in to a single minute, showing second resolution. Double-tap the screen to zoom out to show the entire graph on the screen.

The time scale grid changes dynamically, highlighting minutes, ten-minute, and hour lines as as it runs.

As the graph runs, the overall LEQ (average SPL) for the entire time period is computed and displayed on the screen. Swiping across the graph brings up a cursor that displays the exact dB level and time for any point on the graph.

You can turn on audio recording, so that you have a record of the sounds that were happening while the graph was being stored. You can use this to figure out exactly what the sound was that caused a peak on the graph, for example.

If you exit the app, or are interrupted with a phone call, the graph data will not be lost. SPL Graph will automatically save the graph, and reload it when you next open the program. You can also save a graph in one of ten files on the iPhone, so that you can recall the graph later.

SPL Graph supports saving up to 10 graphs directly on your iPhone or Touch. You can recall these graphs and bring them up on the screen, and listen to the sounds that were made while the graph was recorded. You can also store an image of the screen to your photo roll.

The filters are all ANSI type 1 or better, and include A-weighting, C-weighting, and all octaves band filters from 32 to 16kHz.

Like all Studio Six Digital audio apps, SPL Graph supports calibration. The app ships calibrated for a typical iPhone 3G. If you have access to a calibrated SPL meter you can calibrate your iPhone.

NOTE: This app was renamed from “LEQ Graph”.

You can use SPL Graph on an iPod Touch second generation by using a headset microphone. If you have first generation Touch, you can use the app only with a third-party microphone input adapter. See our web site for more detail.

Also, see our other great audio and acoustical analysis apps: AudioTools, SPL, SPL Meter, RTA, ETC, RT60, FFT, Generator, and Speaker Pop.

SPL

Posted by Mikers On March - 22 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

SPL is a professional-grade digital sound level meter (decibel meter) for your iPhone. It includes all of the modes, filters, and features that you would expect from an ANSI or IEC Sound Level Meter. All filters and averaging modes meet or exceed the criteria for ANSI Type 1 or better. SPL is created from the same folks who brought you the Audio Toolbox and ATB Plus.

*** IMPORTANT NOTE ***

Do Not buy this app if you own AudioTools — buy it from WITHIN AudioTools.

If you are planning on buying iAudioInterface, you should consider buying our AudioTools suite of apps instead of this app, and buy this app from within AudioTools. It is priced lower in AudioTools.

*** Important Note for 3Gs Owners ****

The 3Gs has a much steeper low-frequency roll-off filter than previous models. This release detects the 3Gs model and corrects this as much as possible, given the extreme loss of low frequencies. See our web site for more information.

Graphics — There are three user-selectable options for the front panel. These include aluminum, dark metal, and plain. The dark metal option, with blue digits, is designed to work best in dark environments. Use aluminum or plain in daylight. To change the skin, just tap the small “i” icon in the bar on the top of the screen.

Store Results — We now have provided 9 memory slots for storing results. The dB SPL level, mode, weighting, time, date, and a description are all stored. Also, for non-Leq modes, the max and relative are stored, and for Leq, the Max and Leq time.

The iPhone 3G has the best microphone frequency response. SPL will work on the first generation iPhone, but without the same accuracy. You can also use SPL with our calibrated iPhone measurement mic, see below for details.

If you have an iPod Touch 2nd Generation, SPL will work, but you need to use an external mic, like the headphones / mic that is included with the iPhone.

The screen flips if you turn the phone upside down, so that you can point the built-in iPhone mic directly at the sound source.

*** Modes: Slow, Fast, Impulse, Peak, and Leq.

*** Filters: A and C weighting, and 10 octave band filters.

*** Includes a resettable Max field to track the highest reading.

*** Includes a reference field (except in Leq mode) so that you can set a reference level and do seat-to-seat comparisons.

The SPL meter can be fully calibrated. It comes preset with the calibration for a typical iPhone 3G. Most iPhone model 3G will be within a few dB of this reading. If you have access, even temporarily, to a calibrated sound level meter, just use the calibration field on the flipside to match the meter, and you will be accurately calibrated.

Also, see our other professional-grade audio apps: Speaker Pop, to test speaker polarity, and RTA, a real-time analyzer for the iPhone.

And, we will soon be releasing a calibrated, accurate measurement microphone as part of our iAudioInterface system for the iPhone and Touch. This will allow measuring a range from approximately 40 dB SPL to 120 dB SPL. Each mic will include a calibration factor that you will enter into the SPL app for calibrated measurements. This mic will also work with Speaker Pop, our speaker polarity tester, FFT, RTA, ETC, and other acoustical measurement apps that we will be releasing soon.

NOTE: I have enabled the “buy for first gen Touch option”, but be advised that you have to arrange your own input via the dock connector. This model does not support the headset mic nor does it have an internal mic.

Coming soon, an iPhone internal mic compensation filter, to cancel out the low-frequency roll-off present in the iPhone.

See our other audio apps, including AudioTools.

Also, if you are looking for a great range of high-quality, professional, audio test equipment, check out www.sencore.com. They sell the current versions of the Audio Toolbox, as the SoundPro line of audio test equipment.
